Copper plumbing pipes come in a variety of flavors, which are tradeoffs between quality and cost. There are two types you'll find in residential plumbing (M and L). These pipes have an identical outer diameter, which can make it hard to distinguish between the two. However, the pipes come with markings that are RED (for M) and BLUE (for L). If you can find this color on either a stripe or writing on the pipe, then you know the type.
Red Stripe is Type M |
Blue Stripe is Type L |
If you can't find this marking, that's ok! We recommend you start with meters configured for type L. After a couple months of running the meters, compare your total consumption to the utility meter. If your meters are measuring more than 5% less than the utility, you likely have type M pipes. Let support@simplesubwater.com know and we can push an updated configuration to your meters for type M.
